Revolutionary War-era autograph letter signed by Major John Doughty (1754-1826) to General Henry Jackson (1747-1809) forwarding a list of officers entitled to brevets with the 4th Massachusetts Regiment to General Henry Knox (1750-1806) for admittance to the Society of the Cincinnati and General George Washington’s (1732-1799) discharges. 1783 AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY MAJOR JOHN DOUGHTY TO GENERAL HENRY JACKSON FORWARDING A LIST OF OFFICERS WITH THE 4TH MASSACHUSETTS REGIMENT TO GENERAL HENRY KNOX Reads in part: “Dr. General, Genl. Knox requests the favour of you to send Cummings to his Quarters immediately if possible. Will you be so good as to send me by the Bearer or Return of the Officers of the 4th Mass. Regt. entitled to Brevets agreeable to be sent to Resolve of Congress. With Respect - I am your most Obd. Sert., John Doughty, Art. Major, 7th Novr. 1783, Brigdr. Genl. H. Jackson.” Contains one page with docketing on the verso, measures 8.5 by 6.75 inches, and in fine condition with foxing, toning, and evidence of mounting on the left border. KNOX PLANS TO ADMIT MEMBERS WHO FOUGHT AT THE BATTLES OF BUNKER HILL AND SARATOGA TO THE SOCIETY OF THE CINCINNATI AND FORWARD THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON’S DISCHARGES The 4th Massachusetts fought at the Battles of Bunker Hill, Siege of Boston, New York and New Jersey Campaigns, Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, Monmouth, and Rhode Island. Towards the end of the war, Jackson commanded the 4th Massachusetts to assist with the British evacuation of New York City, during which time Doughty served as the head of Jackson’s artillery. Written only two months after the signing of the Treaty of Paris and four days after the 4th Massachusetts disbanded.
