Originally published anonymously this is Beste's account of four years in France with his family. Later he went on to also live in Italy and wrote the volume, Italy as it is, or, Narrative of an English Family's Residence for Three Years in that Country. CONDITION Bound in quarter leather with marble paper-covered boards. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing, marks to the boards, cracking to the spine and bumping to the corners. There is a small circular paper sticker to the front board and a small amount of what looks like stamp paper stuck to the rear. The binding is tight and firm with the boards and all internal pages securely attached. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional brown spot or handling mark. There is a bookplate on the front pastedown from Priory of Our Lady of Good Council, Hayward's Heath and the half title has this ink stamped onto the page twice. The front blank endpaper has a copperplate inscription. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
