It is printed in a small format, measuring 7 by 11 in size, and is 8 pages long. The issue came from a bound volume and has typical minor disbinding marks at the spine, plus a few small light browning spots from age, but is still excellent and attractive condition. The back page of this issue has an article on THE CASSOWARY, illustrated with an excellent 4.5x6-inch woodcut engraving of three of these birds. The accompanying text is 40 lines describing the cassowary, with it saying in part: . . . This scarce and remarkable bird (the Struthis Casuarius of Linnaeus) is found in India, and the most eastern part of the old continent. Even in its native regions it is uncommon; and few are domesticated. The habitual dulness of these birds, their disagreeable voice, and their hard, black flesh, offer no compensation for the cost of rearing and supporting them. . . They run very swiftly, and often outstrip the fleetest horses. They resist dogs by dealing them severe blows with their feet. . . Etc. The cover story of the issue, with a half-page illustration, is on TANTALLON CASTLE, the ruins of which are shown with Bass Rock in the distance, near the town of North Berwick, off East Lothian in Scotland. What now remains is principally a long stretch of ragged wall, surmounted by a fragment of a tower, whose weather-beaten front, frowning over the waves, presents an aspect peculiarly desolate and melancholy. The text on the history of this castle takes up the remainder of the front page, and half of the second page. Other articles are on USE OF CORN IN ENGLAND (one and pages); THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON (over page of text, plus an 8x6-inch engraving of Principal Front of the University of London; LIBRARIES FOR WORKING MEN (2 pages); and a short item of 18 lines on Deer Hunting by American Indians. *********************** Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history.
