The medicines discussed to this work has a strong focus on the branch of Eclectic Medicine, of which John King was a major practitioner. Eclectic medicine was a branch of American medicine which made use of botanical remedies and physical therapy practices. It gained popularity during the second half of the nineteenth century. The movement expanded in the 1840s as a part of a populist anti-regular medical movement in North America.
