Description: 1890’s Willard Hoagland pedestrian cabinet card. Auburn NY native. Hoagland was a MLB and minor league baseball ump besides being a pro race walker. For those who know me personally, most can likely say they have been bored by my talks on the sport of race walking. Race walking was the highest paid sport for a good portion of the 19th century. It was lucrative and was filled with cheating and sabotage as a direct result of the large amounts of money involved in a race. Hoagland was one of the top race walkers of his era. Hoagland is also said to have been a prize fighter. I haven’t seen any evidence. Card is a little less than 5 by 7 inch. Stains, toning and wear. Very heavy horizontal crease. Feel free to ask questions.
