This is a rather rare production variation that was manufactured about three months at the end of 1896. The 1896 was the initial change from manufacturing black powder cartridge rifles to the new smokeless cartridges. Remington changed the specifications of their new smokeless cartridge rifles in 1897. The 1897 model was then manufactured for five years and is a standard model type of the smokeless RB rifles This sight assembly is still mounted on three inches of the muzzle end of the original rifle barrel. If you have a battered or incomplete 1896 RB and are looking for a front sight assembly this may be the only chance to obtain one for your restoration.
