Description: Here is a very scarce Series 1935-A $1 note, World War II Emergency issue for Hawaii, key A-C block. Overprinted HAWAII twice vertically across the face; large horizontal H A W A I I across the back. Brown serial numbers and seal. Serial # A99059507C. Treasury signatures of Julian and Morgenthau. The A-C block has become the key to set after the F-C block. Very few A-C block notes were saved in any grade. SHARP VERY FINE. NO PINHOLES or TEARS. SEE PHOTOS The U.S., fearful after the Pearl Harbor attack that the Japanese would invade and seize the Hawaiian Islands, issued a decree requiring the removal of all U.S. currency from the Islands and its replacement with special $1, $5, $10 and $20 notes, with brown serial numbers and seals, overprinted HAWAII. These notes were the only currency legal tender in the Islands from mid-1942. The idea was that if the Japanese seized the Islands, all of the Brown seal HAWAII notes could be declared worthless and the Japanese would not get any financial benefit. However, this invasion did not come to pass. The HAWAII notes were the only notes circulating in Hawaii and the Pacific until mid 1944. Most US troops serving in the Pacific Theater of war were paid in these HAWAII notes. After the war, they were gradually withdrawn from circulation and destroyed.
