After the invasion of Poland by German and Soviet troops in September 1939, most state institutions were evacuated abroad. The first seat of the Bank of Poland in exile was Paris, but after the defeat of France in mid-1940, it was moved to England. Back then, no one thought that the war would last so many years. The Bank of Poland started to prepare new banknotes to be put into circulation after the liberation. The money printing was commissioned by the famous London label Thomas De La Rue & Co. Limited (the same one that printed the first issues of modern zlotys) and the American Bank Note Company in New York. A full series of banknotes, dated August 15, 1939, were made in London. It covered the denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 zlotys.Signatures: President - Władysław Byrka Managing Director - Leon Barański Chief Treasurer - Stanisław Orczykowski The design and engravings of the obverse and reverse were made by Włodzimierz VacekLegal clause: "Bank of Poland tickets are legal tender in Poland" In the USA, only two banknotes were printed: 20 and 50 zlotys with the date of August 20, 1939.Signatures: President - Władysław Byrka Managing Director - Leon Barański Chief Treasurer - Stanisław OrczykowskiThe author of the project is unknownLegal clause: "Bank of Poland tickets are legal tender in Poland" In 1947, the emigration notes of the Bank of Poland of both issues were brought to Poland.Although the banknotes were of very high quality, the name of the issuer and the signatures were no longer valid.Updating printing was considered, but this proved too costly. In the end, almost all of the circulation was milled at the paper mill in Miłków near Karpacz.Only 2,000 sets were left for archival purposes - 1,000 circulation notes each and 1,000 patterns.Hence, these banknotes are very rare and sought after today. The collectors' market in the nineties also saw a few copies of designs (imprinted in English SPECIMEN) from the auction of the American Bank Note Company archives. Copies of banknotes are professionally printed in the printing house while maintaining the true colors of originals. In the case of purchasing several items, we will refund the overpayment for the shipment.
