Description: 1987 Redware Bank Glazed and Slip Decorated With Bird on Top By Dorothy Long For your Contemporary Redware Collection - LongBank1987 Details Description: Very interesting contemporary glazed redware bank in the form of a ball on top of a stepped base with a bird sitting on top. The bird, which has a long neck and a fanned tail, has a yellow beak, wings, and eyes. The tail also has yellow slip lines with green highlights. The bank itself is decorated with a wavy yellow line and green and yellow lines at the top and bottom. The tail of the bird has yellow and green feathers on both sides of the tail. The bank has a flat base and a slot for introducing the coins on the top to the right of the bird. The bank has an orangish brown glaze as background. Origin: Montgomery County, Southeastern Pennsylvania Size: The bank is ~6 1/4" high including the bird and is 3" diameter at the base. The bank weighs about 14.5 ounces. Maker: Dorothy Long. Marks: It has the date 1987 followed by the name Dorothy Long incised on the bottom. It is also stamped M.E.L. which stands for Museum Editions Limited, a subscription service, where you receive one piece of redware each month for a year when you subscribe. It was run by the old Early American Life magazine. Some of the potters which were part of this service included Jeff White, Dorothy Long, and Lester Breininger. It is rather substantial and weighs over 14 ounces, which is rather heavy for its size. A definite beauty deserving of a prominent spot in any redware collection. Condition: Bank is in excellent condition. It has no chips, cracks, repairs, or hairlines. The piece has fine crazing to the glaze throughout.
