Description: Welcome toMAD MONK BOOKS BOOK TITLECAPTAINS COURAGEOUS'A Story of the Grand Banks AUTHORRudyard Kipling PUBLISHERMacmillan and CompanyLondon DATE1898 SIZE7 1/8" tall, 5" deep, 1 1/8" thick. PAGES245 EXTERIOR CONDITIONThis beautiful binding is bound in original Teele green colored leather with a burgundy colored leather title band on the spine. The binding has ornate gold gilt on the spine of the book, five gold gilt raised bands on the spine, with the title and author of the book CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS--KIPLING in gold gilt on the spine. The front and rear covers have decorative gold gilt lining and blind stamped designs along the perimeter edges. In addition, there is gold gilt designs on the top, bottom and side "edges" of the front and rear boards. The front cover has a circular logo and the words "Wigan Grammar School" in gold gilt. The gold gilt on the spine, the front cover and the rear cover remains very strong with the title of the book clearly visible (in gold) on the spine. The binding shows minor rubbing, bumping and scuffing for a book of this age (over 125 years old). The calf leather shows minor chipping along the top and bottom edges of the spine along with the two top corners of the book. A tiny bit of the gold gilt has been lost in these same areas. The calf leather shows minor hairline cracking and chipping along the front and rear exterior hinges from top to bottom--not effecting the functionality of the two hinges. Both exterior hinges remain extremely strong and very functional with no board cracking or separation. The page edges are a beautiful marbled blue and red in color showing minor age toning along the side edge and dust dulling along the top edge. The book stands straight and tall on its own and is not cocked. At rest, the book does not pop open, but closes tightly. A very unique and striking binding indeed! A picture is worth a thousand words--see attached photos for more detail. INTERIOR CONDITIONThe front and rear endpapers are a beautiful marbled burgundy, blue and rust in color. The paste down portion of the front and rear endpapers are both holding firmly to the boards, like new. The front and rear inside (paper) hinges have NO cracking, something rarely seen in books of this age. There is a 4.5"x5" bookplate glued to the front paste down page. The text block remains tight, with NO loose signatures. There are NO loose or missing pages throughout the book. The pages throughout the book are crisp and very lightly age toned with only a hint of "foxing" here and there (see attached photos as an example). The tissue guard covering the title page has aged to a light tea color (from the acid in the tissue paper). The page corners throughout the book remain sharp and square with NO folded pages. Other than the book plate (described above), there are NO signs of pencil or ink throughout the pages of the book. A picture is worth a thousand words--see attached photos for more detail.
