Description: The royal family that ruled Brazil in the 19th century found trade in its native palm tree nut profitable when Europe discovered and prized it for its many uses. It was so popular that the country was losing 5 percent of its piassava palm trees each year due to poor management. The 60-foot-tall trees were simply cut down to obtain the nuts. It is no wonder that by the end of the century, substitutes were utilized. In its heyday, tons of coquille nuts were shipped to Europe to be turned into an incredible variety of highly ornamental and functional items. The small, richly-colored hazel brown nuts were made into needle and thimble cases, spice graters, buttons, dice cups, umbrella handles, drawer pulls and much more. Many became personal pomanders to be worn on one’s person or were used as room air fresheners in the days when personal hygiene was not easily or often obtainable. Fancifully carved ones were even used as flea traps. This beautifully and intricately carved nut, with its handsome dark coloring, could also have been used for any of the above purposes. The carving is nothing short of amazing with row upon row of concentric circles. Some 100-plus years after the work was completed on it, we can appreciate its workmanship and sculptural quality as a small work of art. This piece comes from a private English collection. It is basically in excellent condition for its age and whatever use it was put through. There is only a flea bite-sized piece missing (see photo). Though it needs a light touch, it screws and unscrews easily. It measures 2-1/8 inches long. Personal and cashier’s checks also accepted.
