Description: These 25 French cuff buttons were dug around the ancient city of Sevastopol, on the Crimean Peninsula, the Ukraine, 20-30 years ago with a metal detector. A few were found in France on Franco-Prussian War fields; bought to fill in the gaps. My asking price comes to only $13 each. Most if not all are of museum quality and the vast majority have their manufacturer's names on their reverse (surrounding the shank). These are all real "keepers" you can't upgrade. All are 160 years old or thereabouts. I apologize for the poor quality of the two photos. The separate button at the bottom was to show you the shank on the rear of a button. These are all cuff buttons and they measure 16mm in width; all have their shanks. What's so neat about them is that each has a regimental number on the front, so you know exactly what regiment used it. The regimental number is centered within a small ring with an open dot at the top. Compare that to Union cuff buttons from the American Civil War, where you have no idea what regiment or brigade used it and at $13, they're junky buttons with little collecting value. From left to right, top to bottom, you have the following regimental numbered French buttons: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 30, 31, 32, 33, and 34. The few buttons missing in sequence are extremely difficult to find and I doubt you'll ever find them. I've collected these for 30 years and I've been unable to find some of the numbers after all this time. I am selling these at below my initial purchase price, which included shipping from overseas. This collection comes in a Sgt Riker glass-fronted display case. The buttons may shift around in shipping. *** By the way, it is extremely difficult to find, much less buy, dug buttons from the Ukraine now due to the ongoing war in the Ukraine and Russia's control of the Crimean Peninsula. My sources from the Ukraine tell me metal detecting is becoming hard to do due to government interference and local laws now forbidding it in many areas. Increased urban development is also paving over many of the French campsites; similar to what's going on in America. Bottom-line - these buttons are becoming increasingly scarce.
