7/20/1872 Vanity Fair Color Engr Prez Candidate Horace Greeley & Bio Blurb Page

Description: This 9 1/8" x 14" paper, colored engraving page comes from the July 20, 1872 issue of the British magazine, Vanity Fair. It gives a great foreigner's cartoon of Horace Greeley as he was running for election that year against President Ulysses Grant. And our listing includes the rare biography page as well, which isn't found very often and speaks volumes when read. Greeley was a political anomaly. He started out publishing newspapers, almanacs and books and made a fortune after he bought (and turned) the New York Tribune into an empire. He became the "Democratic and Liberal Republican" presidential nominee in 1872 after having been a life-long Whig, anti-slavery activist and republican party member. Many people mocked him for this opportunism, including Thomas Nast in pointed cartoons on the pages of Harper's Weekly. Greeley had a terrible year that year: his wife died just before the election, he got his clock cleaned by Grant on election day in early November, and then he died within a month from that, a broken man - railing against Whitelaw Reid who had taken control of Greeley's New York Tribune for having "stolen" his publishing empire. This proves that, like John, Paul, George and Ringo claimed; "Money can't buy you love." This would look wonderful matted and framed on your wall, particularly in an antique walnut or other period, 19th Century frame. Especially if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars (on up) for other authentic, 1872 Greeley campaign posters or engravings. So, now's your chance to affordably add something pretty darn rare to your collection. The fact that this is classic, political cartoon artwork doesn't hurt, either. How much period, Horace Greeley presidential campaign material do YOU have in YOUR collection? This in nice condition but please look at our images to judge condition for yourself so you can be happy with your purchase. There's a piece off at top left that matboard will fix. Remember, this stuff's called ephemera, folks, since it was made to be used and then discarded. So we're just lucky to have things like this in any condition to add to our collections. We are members of APIC and sell only authentic presidential (and other collectible) material so buy with confidence. We'll be happy to combine S & H costs on multiple purchases. Shipping on this will be $7.50 carefully rolled in a tube with tracking. 7551
