Description: A very rare leather bound set of The Family Shakespeare dating from 1820 in The Georgian Era. They are a complete set of the Ten Volumes and The Second Edition. They state 'NOTHING HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE ORIGINAL TEXT, BUT THOSE WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS ARE OMITTED WHICH CANNOT WITH PROPRIETY BE READ ALOUD IN A FAMILY'. Wonderfully prim and proper evocative of another time. They were compiled by Thomas Bowdler where the term 'bowdlerize' comes from, meaning prudish. Paternoster Row (See photos) where these books come from is a street in London which was the centre of the publishing trade. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, And Brown were a publishing company there, founded 300 years ago in 1724. Their offices were eventually bombed out during The Blitz in WW2. We purchased these for them being in mind boggling good condition for being 200 years old. books of this age are not usually like this. We were stunned. For a Fourth Edition set you can expect to pay in excess of $3000. These books also sell at Sotheby's. Regarding William Shakespeare, nothing more can be said. An unassailable giant, considered the greatest writer in the English language. A wonderful collection for the serious enthusiast of The Bard Of Avon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- International buyers are responsible for import fees and any additional costs.
