ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Ultra-Rare Long Out-of-Print (OOP) Vintage 1972 Collotype Lithograph The Depicts an Interior View of a Barn on Alvaro Olson’s Farm in Cushing, Maine with His Small White Dory Boat Stored on a Ledge titled, “Hay Ledge”, after the original 1957 tempera painting by the world-famous listed painter, ‘Andrew Newell Wyeth’ (American, 1917-2009) whose printed signature appears lower-left in the image corner area (tough to see in the dark shadows). The Olsons were friends and neighbors of the Wyeths in Cushing, ME and Wyeth would visit their farm frequently and was the subject of many of his paintings. About the Painting: Alvaro Olson’s dory—relinquished when he took over the care of his disabled sister, Christina (Who was the inspiration for Wyeth’s famous painting “Christina’s World”) after the death of their parents—sits on a ledge in the dark recesses of a barn on the family farm in Maine, a symbolic reminder of his former life as a fisherman. (Source: Brandywine Museum of Art) On August 24, 2000, the Greenville County Museum Commission approved the purchase of Andrew Wyeth’s 1957 tempera, Hay Ledge, a major painting that was the cornerstone of the former Holly and Arthur Magill collection, which had been on loan to the Museum from 1978-1989. Hay Ledge was purchased in honor of the Magills who paid half the cost of building the Museum, which opened in 1974, and who created its endowment in 1992. The $1.5 million acquisition was funded by the Commission and the Museum's membership organization, The Museum Association, Inc. stated about the piece, “The purchase of Hay Ledge is a tribute to the extraordinary role that Holly and Arthur Magill played in the development of this community,” said Museum Director Thomas Styron, who continued, “Their generous support of the visual arts is well-known, but the Magills by their example, also inspired a new era of cultural philanthropy in Upstate South Carolina.” Painted when the artist was forty years old, Hay Ledge is a poignant interior glimpse into the Olson barn in Cushing, Maine. The Olson family and their farm are central figures in many of Wyeth’s most renowned paintings, including his masterpiece, Christina's World (1948). In Hay Ledge, an abandoned white dory is starkly lit in the dark confines of a loft. Wyeth has said it was a tribute to Alvaro Olson, who stopped lobstering and took up truck gardening so he could care for his sister Christina, who was crippled from polio. “Alvaro used to fish,” Wyeth recalled, “and then he realized that he would be off all day hauling his nets, with his sister alone after the mother and father died, and he would be the only one who could take care of her. And so, he stopped lobstering in his dory. He stopped, just like that, one day.” (Excerpts from: tfaoi site “Greenville County Museum of Art: Wyeth’s “Hay Ledge” Returns to Greenville”) Publisher & Print Info: The artist’s copyright, date, name & rights info, ‘© 1972 Andrew Wyeth—All rights reserved.’, appears printed lower-left in the outer margin area just beneath the image; The title, artist’s name & [previous] collection info, ‘Hay Ledge, by ANDREW WYETH, Courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph E. Levine’, appears printed lower-middle; The distributor info, ‘New York Graphic Society Ltd., Exclusive Distributor’, appears printed lower-right just under the image; and the printing info, ‘Printed in U.S.A. by Triton Press Inc., N.Y.C.’, appears printed lower-right in the bottom outer margin corner respectively. The Collotype was published on January 1, 1972 and the ‘Author of Reproduction’ was Chadds Ford Publications. The Collotype is on a nice heavier-weight ivory-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The size with wide margins is 23” x 41-7/8”, Image size is 18” x 37-7/8”. The Collotype is in VeryGood-Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade. This Collotype had been tucked away amongst other vintage lithos & prints since it was purchased by Meibohm Fine Arts and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as good as any collector could hope to find in its current never-framed condition. The outer margin issues mentioned below don’t really affect the image area at all—image displays fine—and are negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Extremely minimal, very tiny & faint foxing specks scattered here & there in the outer margin areas which are barely even noticeable if you really, really hunt for them, and aren’t really even worth mentioning (None noticeable in image area). Very minimal, very slight & small crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area which aren’t even noticeable and aren’t even worth mentioning (only lightly noticeable from the back); Other creases scattered here & there in the outer margin areas, along some outer margin edges and some more-pronounced creasing in the left & right outer margin areas as well as the upper & lower corners from being in a drawer and barely fitting likely (upper-left larger slight margin crease barely enters upper-left image corner—also negligible), as well as some toning/yellowing of the paper stock from also being in the wood drawer and touching the outer edges of the drawer, and some outer margin edge-wear with some dents & dings scattered here & there and one ultra-tiny 1/8” outer margin edge dent-tear on the right edge upper-right which is repaired from behind with archival tape for protection—as previously mentioned, all outer margin issues are completely negligible since they can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Negligible/no other real toning of the rest of the paper stock from age, especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself. This rare collotype has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. What a beauty! We normally ship within 2 business days of cleared payment, but PLEASE NOTE: Please allow extra delivery time for your item(s) to clear all Customs Houses (U.S. and Abroad-typical delivery time about 14 business days +/-). We also would need a VALID INTERNATIONAL ADDRESS to 'Ship To'. ***IMPORTANT NOTE*** Customs charges/fees & duty taxes are based on the final value amount of the item(s) that we are required by U.S. law to declare on Customs Forms before shipping the item. Under U.S. law we are unable to mark a smaller amount or to declare the item a gift, sample, or anything other than merchandise prints/paintings etc, so PLEASE DO NOT ASK. EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!! Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
