Description: DESCRIPTION: This is a quite beautiful Antique Jacquard Loomed Wool & Cotton Reversible, 'Double sided' (double thickness) Coverlet, with off white plus two colors- an off-white base color, with details in red and navy blue. Made in two woven strips and sewn together by hand down the center line. Each side shows the same design but a variation in color, and is reversible. The design is a repeating round medallion, with a border of intricate thick coral-like details, alternating with a leaf and floral medallion design. Rare Design. There is a wavy flower and leaf border. There is colorful wool fringe along the sides. Estimated age mid 1800's. This Coverlet is in remarkably very good condition for its estimated 170 plus years of use. Someone really loved this Coverlet and took great care of it. These coverlets were made well and have truly stood the test of time. I found the same design Jacquard Coverlet, in indigo blue, and off white, with some border floral variations, Made by John Muir, 1843, Germantown, Wayne County, Indiana. This reportedly rare pattern is called the "Connecticut Beauty" Pattern. Joseph-Marie Jacquard (1752–1834) invented the Jacquard mechanism, a patterning device than, when attached to a loom, made it practical to weave more detailed designs than were previously possible. Smithsonian National Museum of American History: "Muir Family; Figured and Fancy, double-cloth coverlet; 1847; Indiana": I am not certain of the Coverlet Maker- the pattern is very similar to one used by the Muir Family, though I have been advised they used and shared a certain corner block design. No expert, and still trying to research this. Similar Coverlets were... "made by one of the four Muir brothers who emigrated from Kilmarnock, Scotland between the years 1835-41. They were the sons of Scottish weaver, Thomas Muir and were active weavers from 1840-1864, settling first in Germantown, Wayne County, Indiana then dispersing across the state and later into Missouri as was the case with Robert Muir (b. 1808)". 4 Muir Brothers: Thomas Muir (1810-1888) lived in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana and was also active from 1840-1864.John Muir (1815-1892) is the best documented of the weaving brothers. After making it to Indiana with his first wife and four children, the family lived with his brother, Robert. John moved to Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana in 1843. His weaving shop was located on the North side of the town square. William Muir (1818-1888), the youngest of the brothers was trained as a drawboy and silk and paisley shawl weaver in Scotland, immigrating to the US in 1840 where he first lived in Germantown, Wayne Co., Indiana and was active from 1840-1864. Note: I found the same design Coverlet only one other place despite searching far and wide, on "1st Dibs" for $1,036. (reduced). No maker attribution. Found same, I think, on a maybe related site, (or just same Pics & Item) on "Charish" for $1,295. This design is very difficult to find, and the coral-like or tree-like branching design appears very unusual and reportedly 'rare'. The design is certainly distinctive, and beautifully made. Front Pics: 1-10, Back Pics 11-18. Wear, Stain, Repair, Sm.partial hole Pics: 19-24 SIZE: Length without fringe is ~86" X Width ~78" (measured ~ 38" to middle seam without fringe, though longer when measured straight width ( ~79-80"+). Fringe is ~3" at longest. Estimated size ~86"X ~78" plus fringe. Will Remeasure soon. CONDITION: Coverlet is Antique and has been used, and does show some expected wear, but overall in very good condition IMHO. There is an Old repair using wool on a small area of one floral medallion- see pic. #23. I also noted a small hole on one layer of the dual thick coverlet- Pic. #24 Some of the fringe is worn, thin, or absent in some places- see pics at end, and also general pics. A few areas of the embroidered 'pile' is missing or thin, but majority intact and looks good. Bottom right corner (front) is a bit tattered. I noted a medium-small light brown old stain on one edge area-see photo #20 & #10, and a few small brown spots here and there- one at bottom midline Pic #19 . The wool is soft and supple, and overall the Coverlet appears quite nice for display or use. Please use photos to help determine appearance and condition, and zoom in as needed.
