Antonio Gattorno, a Cuban artist of significant importance. In 1919, while in his third year as a painting student at the National Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro in Havana, he won a five-year scholarship to study in Europe. He remained there for seven years, studying in Paris, France, and Italy with the Cuban sculptor Juan José Sicre. His intellectual experience in the Old World was crucial to his artistic growth, as he assimilated formal elements from various sources to shape his style. This led him to become one of the promoters of the new sensitivity in Cuban art in the 1920s. Applying the principles of European modern painting to Cuban themes, which he began upon his return from his scholarship, resulted in the conception of the famous "guajiros" of the 1930s. Gattorno was the first Cuban artist of his generation to achieve international renown. His move to the United States sparked considerable negative criticism (for example, from José Gómez Sicre), which reproached him for abandoning the artistic leadership he had achieved by redirecting his visual discourse towards surrealism and disconnecting from Cuban cultural heritage.ANTONIO GATTORNO.
