Notes: Kentoripai (Kentoripa, Centuripae) was an ancient greek city in south eastern Sicily, near Mount Etna. The city was originally founded as a fortified stronghold by Sicilian natives (Sikels) prior to the Late 6th Century BC. History of Tyrants: The history shows that it was ruled by a series of local Greek Tyrants for much of its early history. These included Simichos, Damon, Dionysios, Nikodemos before being briefly freed from tyrany and granted Syracusan citizenship byTimoleon. Tyrants then returned to the city in the figure of Agathokles and then Hieron II. Roman rule: While under influence of Hieron, Rome captured the city during the First Punic War and then made it an autonomous free city at which point it became one of the largest and wealthiest on Sicily through the 3rd and 2nd Century BC. In 44 BC the city was refounded as the Roman colony Centuripae and the citizens enjoyed Latin rights which made them similar to citizens of Rome. The territory of Centuripae was very productive of grain and corn, and the inhabitants were farmers on a large scale, ‘arant enim tota Sicilia fere Centuripini’ (Cic. II Verr. iii. 45). Coinage: No coins are known of this city before the middle of the fourth century, when, in common with many other Sicilian towns, it was liberated from tyrannical rule by Timoleon around 339 BC.
