By the 1950s it was already an important segment, but the establishment of the interstate system supercharged the significance of the family wagon, just as Chevrolet propelled itself to the forefront of the mainstream affordable car world with the gorgeous 1955-57 models. They included a full line of full-size wagons that were stylish, practical, and powered by a revolutionary new V8. From that moment Chevy would be a perennial leader in the segment, and in 1959 it expanded its wagon offerings to include the Kingswood—based on the four-door Bel Air sedan and positioned just below the Nomad. That first Kingswood would remain for just two years, but the nameplate would return a decade later in 1969 with the majestic machine before you, and this time it would be positioned at the very top of Chevy’s wagon range with the introduction of the Kingswood Estate.Like its predecessor, the 1969 Kingswood was based on Chevy’s full-size B-platform shared by the Biscayne/Impala and luxurious Caprice. It was this last that served as the basis for the Kingswood Estate, and it enjoyed the full range of luxury and convenience features with either 2- or 3-row seating. All the B-body Chevys had been thoroughly redesigned for 1969 and featured an all-new body with a distinctive teardrop shape stamped into the fenders around the wheel openings and Kingswood Estate models got simulated wood paneling down the flanks. A modern perimeter-style front bumper and grille surround with optional hidden headlights and Chevy’s trademark “Astro Ventilation” replaced the wing windows, greatly reducing wind noise at highway speeds and providing superior airflow and more stylish window openings. Out back the upscale Kingswood featured a three-taillight-per-side arrangement like the Caprice (lesser wagons like the Brookwood and Townsman had just two) but more importantly, it received an innovative new two-way tailgate which could both swing out and fold down and offered an optional power-lowering rear window.The royal treatment continued below the skin with what Chevy dubbed the "Golden Chassis." It utilized isolation improvements aimed at providing a smoother, quieter ride and used a computer to choose individually -optimized spring rates based on the specific model and weight of the optional equipment—quite rare for the day from any manufacturer! There were also Automatic Level Control shocks and a Special Performance Suspension available, as well as optional power front disc brakes. Those came in handy because all Kingswood models came with a 327 V8 as standard equipment, but the full catalog of optional performance V8s could be ordered—everything from 300hp 350 out of the Camaro up through the hulking 390-horse 427 from the Impala SS!Kingswood wagons could be delivered in 15 different color combinations. Automodello has chosen Yellow and Red for these two Standard Edition with a production run of 99 units per color. Each of the 49 Encomium Edition are in Blue, Black or Silver.
