Description: Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Original 1863 “The State of Alabama” - “Fifty Cents” fractional currency issued from Montgomery, Alabama. The note is printed on one side only. The note has an engraved signature and the hand inscribed serial number “32812”. Juliet Hopkins is at right. These smaller type fractional notes or “emergency scripts” were issued by most of the southern states and even northern businesses. During the Civil War the hoarding of copper, silver and gold (Hard Cash) resulted in little coinage in circulation. The only way to “make change” was to issue these type notes. The Battle of Mobile Bay of August 5, 1864, was a naval and land engagement in which a Union fleet commanded by Rear Admiral David G. Farragut, assisted by a contingent of soldiers, attacked a smaller Confederate fleet led by Admiral Franklin Buchanan and three forts that guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay. The scene “Battle of Mobile Bay” was reprinted from the lithograph by Prang. Louis Prang, from Boston, was the most prolific and influential publisher of American chromolithographs. Born in Germany, Prang learned to print in color from his father, a calico printer. In 1850, the younger Prang immigrated to the United States for political reasons. He set up his own firm of L. Prang & Co. in 1860. The series of Civil War scenes were done in the 1886-88 period. The hand made solid Oak frame is 8” x 10” (glass) in size. All of the frame and display work was done in our cabinet shop here in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The frame is ready to hang. The wire is recessed which allows the frame to rest flat back to the wall as in a museum mount. The “bumpons” on each back corner protect the wall and keep the frame level. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased.
