Description: This Press Photo features beauty queen, Geraldine G. Glassman. She was Miss Pennsylvania in the 1933 Miss America contest. She was a semi-finalist in the competition, finishing in the top 18. Interestingly, Geraldine was not the first choice when she competed for Miss Philadelphia (preliminary contest before the Miss Pennsylvania competition). In fact, she was the third choice and only won when it was learned that first and second place winners, were married. Another two women who were ranked above her were eliminated. One was married with a child, and the other was a professional entertainer. There were protests, and even a riot, about the outcome of the contest. Geraldin required police protection. The Philadelphia debacle became a national story. There was a lot of drama to handle and Geraldine was only 17 years old. Apparently she had the coping mechanisms to handle the stress, and she was able to successfully compete in the Miss America Contest. In 1935, Geraldine married well-known explorer, Richard Kingsley. This press photo captures Geraldine handling the apples at her father's Philadelphia grocery store. This photograph measures about 5" x 7" and is in very good condition (see scans)
