Description: Buckmaster's Hillsboro, Alton & St. Louis Daily Express 1857 receipt for $60 (Measures approximately 6 x 3.25"). Started by Col. Nathaniel Buckmaster - Illinois Legislator and Prison Operator. Served in the Blackhawk war & was present at the Nauvoo Militia Mormon incident (with Joseph & Hyrum Smith). He was the Alton Post Master from 1838-1841. At the end of this time he purchased interests in a series of ferries crossing the Mississippi River between North St. Louis and Alton which he owned and operated until his death, in 1855. Afterwards passing to his son Henry Buckmaster who was also a wholesale grocer in Alton and who married into the prestigious DeBow family. .............................................................................................
