Description: 13/16" / brass In 1929, Aiken County Stores, Inc. took over operation of the cotton mill company store at Bath. The firm, chartered under the laws of the state of Delaware, was controlled by Aiken Mills, Inc., which owned and operated three cotton mills in the Horse Creek Valley. Aiken Mills, Inc. was in turn owned by United Merchants & Manufacturers, Inc., which sought to unite both the manufacturing and retail sales of finished textiles in order to gain certain financial advantages from an integrated business model. The company also ran the mill stores in Clearwater and Langley, two other mill villages located nearby. About 1937, the name of the company was changed to Aiken Stores, Inc. when new stores were opened in Anderson, Calhoun Falls, Gaffney, and Williamston, none of which were located in Aiken County. The company also owned and operated about 20 Martha Park dress shops, as well as several other retail establishments. In 1946, the general manager of Aiken Stores, Inc., Wayland H. Cato, left company employment and founded Cato Stores. Cato had worked for Aiken Stores for around 25 years and was responsible for expanding the firm beyond the operation of cotton mill company stores into mainstream retailing. Over the past 70 years, the Cato Corporation has experienced substantial growth and now operates over 1,000 retail outlets specializing in the sale of women’s fashions. One interesting note about the tokens described above is that two legal cases were brought before the South Carolina Supreme Court concerning the issuance of tokens by Aiken County Stores. In both instances, the court affirmed the rulings of a lower court that the tokens were a form of merchandise order and that the store had the right to refuse their redemption by anyone to whom they were not issued. sctokens This South Carolina Cotton Mill Token is a rare find for collectors of Exonumia and Trade Tokens. The token features the Aiken County Stores and has the number "10" on it. This item has been circulated, but still holds its value and historical significance. The token is a great addition to any collection of Coins and Paper Money and would make a unique gift for a loved one. Don't miss out on the opportunity to own a piece of South Carolina's cotton mill history.
