Chrysalis "Definition" CD (1967) Rev-Ola reissue with 8 bonus tracks

Description: Here we have a lost psychedelic gem from the music's heyday, served up by Ithaca, New York ensemble CHRYSALIS: Definition, first released in 1967 by MGM, reissued in this beautiful expanded CD version nearly four decades later by the good blokes at Rev-Ola, now out of print. Chrysalis was an amazingly talented bunch, creative enough to dabble folk, rock and jazz even Middle Eastern music without being constrained by any of them. The Definition album was their one and only recording, a fine psych LP known to far too few. Frank Zappa, who championed Chrysalis as "a group that has yet to destroy your mind" (and later claimed that Definition was one of the very few pop albums of that era he could listen to) was originally asked to produce, but his involvement in a bitter contractual dispute with MGM/Verve made that impossible. Frontman Spider Barbour, who had appeared on both Zappa's We're Only in It for the Money and Lumpy Gravy (and who is now, ironically, a naturalist devoted to the lives of moths and butterflies) brings a great deal of early Mothers of Invention aesthetic to the table. Jazzy piano motifs flitter about truncated worldbeat rhythms, while short comedy skits provide segues between songs that deal with insects, yodeling girls, and hippie culture. It's all very Sgt. Pepper's, but there is an adventurous glee to the songs and arrangements that's equally matched by the talent behind them. It's the kind of brainy yet daft art rock that collegiate drug users, music school geeks, art-rock devotees and even children can find common ground in. As always, Rev-Ola does a bang-up job on the reissue -- their extensive liner notes and inclusion of eight bonus tracks from the album sessions makes for a rewarding listen in any man's English.
