Description: This Civil War era Confederate buckle was dug up on the Missionary Ridge battlefield located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A small notch is present in the top edge of the buckle which might have happened during manufacturing or during a sword during battle. This is a great piece for any collector of Civil War Militaria. I'm selling this for a friend who bought it decades ago at a flea market in New Hampshire. A group of us are into collecting militaria and based on several opinions we do believe the buckle is authentic for a few reasons: 1. The material color and texture is consistent with cast brass with remnants of black enamel around the letters. 2. The patina, pitting, and wear suggests it has significant age and likely buried for some time. 3. The label and handwriting style look to be from the late 19th to early 20th century which again indicates significant age.4. The text “Found on Mission Ridge Battlefield” adds some provenance. 5. The “CS” lettering and border were often filed down and which left fine lines. Remnants of a filed surface appear on the buckles’ border to the left of the letter “C.” Given that the original filed surface looks mostly pitted, this adds further to its age. Buckle measurements: Length: 2.658 inches or 67.52 mm Height: 1.7 inches or 43.18 mm
