Description: Here we have a lost gem from Bristol avant-shoegazers CRESCENT: Collected Songs, their third album, released in 1998 by the Swarffinger label, issued in this CD edition by Roomtone. The Bristol scene, mostly captured in the Nineties, passed somewhat under the radar during that era when the loud, brash sounds of Britpop dominated the UK airwaves. Still, this sound had its share of devotees, and these days sounds less dated than Oasis or Blur. The scene mostly rested on the shoulders of four bands and their various spinoffs: Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone, Crescent and Third Eye Foundation. Crescent was the least-known of these, as well as the most experimental, though they would achieve somewhat greater success as Movietone (virtually the same band, with swapped-round instruments). Collected Songs serves up a murky batch of somber, introverted pieces that combine post acid-trip intimacy with deep loner dynamics. It ranges from moments of explosive dissonance to dubbier, gentle instrumentals with soft, tinkering piano keys and Matt Jones’ matter-of-fact, highly personal and slightly dazed vocal delivery. Recorded from 1995 to 1998, these pieces seem to occupy moments between moments, where the group would lock into a communal mood and let things unfold naturally, nothing hurried. It achieves a spaced, staring-into-the-sky vibe that'll transport you without the drugs, if only because the group already ate them all. Down but not out! One of Crescent's best, years ahead of its time yet still massively overlooked. One day the world will catch up to this group's tilted genius... and here's a chance for you to get a head start.
