Description: Here we have an all-star jazz ensemble for the ages, OLD AND NEW DREAMS, captured for your listening pleasure on their self-titled debut album released in 1977 by the sacred Black Saint label. A virtual reincarnation of Ornette Coleman's classic quartet, Old and New Dreams brought together trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Ed Blackwell, with tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman stepping into Ornette's place as the group's reedsman. Throughout their existence, these four were leaders with numerous projects of their own, which might explain why they only recorded intermittently -- a mere three albums in ten years, with a couple of their sessions released much later after Ed Blackwell's death. This debut album came to be when the idea of a reunion of the original Coleman quartet was floated, but Ornette was fully occupied with his new electrified ensemble Prime Time. So Cherry, Haden and Blackwell recruited Redman (who had already appeared on eight of Ornette's albums, including one with Haden and Cherry) to cut this, focusing on original material and a previously unrecorded Coleman composition. With its tight ensemble playing and an approach that balanced free blowing with a pervading Asia-influenced exoticism, the album was a triumph. The sheer beauty of the collective playing is a marvel, particularly Don Cherry’s lyrical solo on “Chairman Mao,” which also includes a vibrant bass solo from Haden over the singing of a Chinese woman in the background. But really, the whole damn thing is great, capturing four jazz masters at the peak of their skills. This CD is near mint.
