Description: KROHNKITE w/ NATROCHALCITE: Chuquicamata Mine, Calama, El Loa Province, Antofagasta, Chile. Dimensions: 7.5 x 5.0 x 2.7cm, small cabinet. Chuquicamata is one of the largest copper deposits in the world and produces a huge wealth of copper for industry and also a large suite of incredibly beautiful and some rare mineral species of which the most classic is Krohnkite, a sodium copper sulfate. This is a rather large, and very attractive specimen for this rare copper species. The Krohnkite occurs as vein fillings, and most often looks like this, with constrained, vertically oriented crystal seams completely filling a fracture space between layers of the host rock. This piece has abundant and rich, gorgeous, bright medium blue, translucent Kronkite as tightly aggregated, parallel crystals in with minor amounts of cream colored, granular Natrochalcite in association. This eye-catching piece displays well from both sides! There is no recent production of this material from Chuquicamata, or "Chuqui" as it is more familiarly known; this material was mined between the late 1800s and 1960s and comes available only in old collections. Chuqui is the largest open pit copper mine in the world by volume. This is an exceptional piece of this rare mineral and is priced more than fair! Ex. Lee Petersen collection with label.
