Description: This is a monumental and incredible Fine Antique Early California Plein Air Landscape Painting, Pastels on Paper, by the early Finnish - American California Impressionist landscape painter, Harry Linder (1886 - 1931.) This artwork depicts a majestic, finely rendered and bucolic sylvan landscape scene in a deeply forested area of Southern California. Tall, finely rendered Eucalyptus trees, lushly painted green grasses, blooming orange wildflowers, and a majestic mountain vista can be seen. Signed: "Harry Linder" in the lower right corner. Additionally, an old brass plaque affixed to the front of the frame reads: "Springtime in California. Harry Linder." This large scale and manor sized painting is approximately 35 x 42 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual visible artwork is approximately 27 1/2 x 35 5/8 inches. This piece likely dates to the late 1910's - early 1920's. Good overall condition for over a century of age and storage, with moderate scuffing and edge wear to the original period hand-carved gilded wood frame, and some mild scattered pastel transfer to the inside of the glass, which appears as blotchy areas or small smudges. This is a very common issue with old pastel paintings, and I can assure you that the painting itself, behind the glass, is in perfect condition. To remove these smudges, you would need to carefully remove the actual painting (without touching the painted surface with your hands,) clean the glass thoroughly, and place the painting back into the frame. This is an extremely delicate and careful process (especially with an old pastels painting,) which I would only trust this task with a seasoned professional in the field. Additionally, the glass has been slightly pushed back along the top edges of the frame (please see photos carefully.) Due to the large size and heavy weight of this piece, S&H costs will be unavoidably high. However, Free Local Pickup from Los Angeles County, California is also an option. Priced to Sell. This artwork is Harry Linder's magnum opus, as he has never produced another known landscape painting as fine or as large as this one. This is museum worthy. Acquired from an affluent old estate collection in Los Angeles County, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer.
