Description: This is a lovely and finely rendered Antique Early California WPA Plein Air Impressionist Landscape Painting, Watercolor on Paper, by early California Impressionist painter and WPA architect, Clarence Nelson Aldrich (1893 - 1953.) This artwork depicts a bucolic and colorful Southern California landscape scene, with tall trees and delicately painted autumnal foliage, lavender hued hills and a bright green tree line visible in the far distance. Signed: "Clarence N. Aldrich" in the lower left corner. This artwork likely dates to the 1930's - early 1940's. Approximately 23 1/2 x 31 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual visible artwork is approximately 16 1/2 x 23 3/4 inches. Good condition for nearly a century of age and storage, with moderate scuffing and edge wear to the original period antique wood frame (please see photos.) Acquired in Los Angeles County, California. Original artworks by Aldrich are housed in the permanent collections of the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University and the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut. Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School Architectural Bas ReliefsClarence Nelson AldrichArchitectural motifs: Stylized Art Deco (with possibly an abstract ramβs head), Mayan zig zag. These highly stylized Art Deco motifs are rarely found in Long Beach schools. Their location at the 2nd floor roofline atop the prominent vertical piers makes them distinctive from a distance. Up close the viewer is rewarded with a Pre-Columbian or perhaps Egyptian-inspired design. The geometric zigzags, spirals and stepped motifs (ziggurats) are intricate and simple at the same time. The unusual long, incised verticals that end in spirals just below the top panels are reminiscent of jets dβeau (spouts of water).
