Description: A classic magazine from the first half of the 20th century! This is the June 1, 1936, issue of Forbes. Its primary cover article is “How Public Utilities Serve Business,” and the cover photos help illustrate that premise. The secondary cover article is “Modernization Prize Contest Winners.” This issue has several utility-focused articles - “Utility Sales Make Dealer Profits,” “Investment Prospects of Utility Shares,” “Utilities Like to Be Protected, but…” and “Electricity Is Cheap!” Other key articles include “Aggressive Modernization at International Business Machines,” “Nation’s Eyes on White House,” and “Are Trade Pacts Boosting Foreign Trade?” There are other articles/features, many black & white photos and vintage advertisements (including a Coca-Cola advertisement focused on the company’s 50th anniversary!). This issue of the magazine contains 68 pages and measures approximately 8.75 x 11.5 inches. B. C. Forbes, a financial columnist for the Hearst newspaper chain, and his partner Walter Drey, the general manager of the Magazine of Wall Street, founded Forbes magazine on September 15, 1917. Forbes provided the money and the name and Drey provided the publishing expertise. The original name of the magazine was Forbes: Devoted to Doers and Doings. B.C. Forbes was editor-in-chief of the magazine, a post he held until his death in 1954. B.C. Forbes was assisted in his later years by his two eldest sons, Bruce Charles Forbes (1916-1964) and Malcolm Stevenson Forbes (1917-1990). Bruce Forbes took over on his father's death, and his strengths lay in streamlining operations and developing marketing. During his tenure (1954–1964) the magazine's circulation nearly doubled.
