Description: [zipedit] GermanyEvent Publicity Poster Stamp The Ausstellung für Elektrotechnik und Kunstgewerbe (Exhibition of Electrical Engineering and Craftsmen) was held in Stuttgart from June through September, 1896. There were four different poster stamps issued in various color conbinations, all using the same image in them. The image was taken from a large painting by German artist Ferdinand Keller. According to Wikipedia: Ferdinand Keller, later Ferdinand von Keller, (born August 5, 1842 in Karlsruhe, † July 8, 1922 in Baden-Baden) was a German history painter of historicism and university professor. The painting was actually a study for a large mural intended for the Stuttgart Trade Museum. The painting had several allegorical figures, including that of "Neuzeit (Modern Times) the Genius of Light" in the center front. It is this allegorical figure that is the central theme of the poster stamps, holding a light aloft while leaning on a winged wheel. The poster stamps were issued in two distinct styles - square, but tilted by 45 degrees to a lozenge shape; and a vertical rectangle. Each of the two styles had two versions of the placement of the printer's imprint. The first had the imprint either at the base of the central vignette, or at the lower edges of the stamp. The second had the printer's imprint complete at the base of the central vignette, or only a portion at the lower right base of the vignette. And the different styles seem to have appeared in various color combinations. All of the stamps have a background of beige, and the vignettes appear in red, blue, green, violet, and brown. Each of the vignette colors has been seen in distinct shades, which indicates there may have been multiple printings of the stamps. The image of the central allegory appears in "Das frühe Plakat in Europa und den USA" as Germany # 1594, as a publicity poster for the exhibition. The stamps also appear in "A General Illustrated Catalogue of Exhibition and Event Poster Stamps to 1914" compiled by Stewart Gardiner and Steve Greiczek, on page 65, as Types 1 - 4. This lot consists of a single Type 1 stamp in Blue. (Square lozenge shape, with imprint at margin of stamp) This stamp is F/VF, OG, LH. Approximate Stamp Size: 67 x 67 mm. (corner to corner). After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such). Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs. A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described. A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
