This rare type of jasper was discovered in 2006 near the location of the famous Ocean Jasper and can only be found in Madagascar. Also known as Desert Jasper or Royal Savannah Jasper, it is is an opaque, microcrystalline form of quartz called chalcedony, named for its vibrant and varied colors. The stone displays a rich combination of earthy tones, often arranged in swirling patterns, stripes, or spots, including earthy reds, pinks, oranges, and yellows, various shades of brown, as well as occasionally blue, green, and gray, which are created by other minerals coloring the quartz when it was forming. Oranges and yellows are created by iron particles, blue and green from copper, and pink and purple from manganese, for example. High grade rough in this size is becoming increasingly rare, so be sure to stock up today.
