Socrates, the Athenian philosopher, was one of the most prominent figures of ancient Greek culture. He devoted himself to discussing philosophy with people from all walks of life in the city’s public venues, but, unlike the sophists, refused payment for his teachings. In the 1950s, she triumphed at Milan’s La Scala and other prestigious opera houses around the world, with her electrifying interpretations of the most challenging soprano roles, mainly in works by Verdi, Donizetti, Bellini and Puccini.
