Description: "HE SHE IT - Egyptian Court Chronicle B.C. 1302. A Veracious and Truthful Version Preserved and Transcribed for General Use by the Peerless Poet Laureate of His Late Majesty Rhamp Sinnit III. Memphis: Pyramid Row N:36 Fifth Floor, Close on Saturdays 2 P. M." The work is undated, but was produced in 1883 by German Carl Maria SEYPPEL to resemble an ancient Egyptian manuscript, the book with papyrus-like pages and sack cloth binding with wax medallion on the front cover. Profusely illustrated throughout, it tells a satirical story of King Rhampsinnit III of Egypt of the twentieth dynasty. All of the distressed edged paper and cover are original to make this book look ancient. In fact, SEYPPEL received in 1882 a patent for the method of making the paper for his works to appear decayed and reveals a great deal about his work. It was a rather complicated process that involved first saturating the paper with dye, sponging it off, and drying it to make the paper look moldy and decayed, then pouring alcohol along the edges of the bound papers and lighting them on fire to create uneven edges. Condition is very good, perhaps a bit of spotting and edge wearing to the covers, which is difficult to distinguish from the deliberate “antiquing.” Binding is sound and the text block keeps its integrity well and, with 42 pages in total, measures 28 cm or 11” x 19.5 cm or 7 5/8”.
