Description: VERY GOOD condition copy of this interesting and odd unauthorized edition of Herman Melville’s “Israel Potter.” Published in 1865 under a different title (“The Refugee”), bootleg publisher T.B. Peterson credits Melville on the title page with “The Two Captains,” and “Man of the World,” two pieces he did not write. This copy is SIGNED by literary critic and historian Lewis Mumford, who worked for the Dial Magazine and the New Yorker Magazine. Beside the damage shown in the photos, there are light, tiny soil marks to some leaves. Additionally, previous owner Louis L. Kramer’s name is written to the first blank, and his brief notes are on top of the first page of the story. Very odd publication, and one that sold at a Christie’s auction for 885 USD. According to the Christie’s listing, that copy was one of only two known. I have no clue whether this is the second copy or not.
