Description: Spectacular 19th century / early 20th century large lidded ceremonial urn from the Philippines. Handcrafted by the Maranao people in the late 1800s to early 1900s, this urn would have been a gift from the groom's relatives to the bride's family. given as part of the ceremonial gifts provided during the wedding festival. This particular urn appears to be tin or silver plated over copper and brass plated as it is heavily oxidized probably from being close to the water and simply from time. All applied decorations were formed by hand using wire. Unsigned, the urn stands 21 inches tall with a maximum diameter of approximately 8 1/2 inches. In good antique condition, with visible signs of wear and repairs (some of the applied decorations are missing, some others appear to have been glued back on - see close-up pictures) and very heavy oxidation throughout.
