Description: “Lassie Come-Home” written by Eric Knight is a favorite dog story the world over since it was first published in 1938. This 1974 edition is a “picture adaptation of the famous story, especially abridged for young readers” by Felix Sutton for Grosset & Dunlap Publishers of New York. The illustrations were done by Hans H. Helweg for the first printing of 1954. “Lassie Come-Home” was a novel about a rough collie's trek over many miles to be reunited with the boy she loves. Written by British/American author Eric Knight, he introduced the reading public to the canine character of Lassie in a magazine story published on December 17, 1938, in The Saturday Evening Post. The story was later expanded to a novel and published in 1940 to critical and commercial success. Eric Mowbray Knight (1897 – 1943) was born in West Yorkshire to Quaker parents. His father was a rich diamond merchant who, when Eric was two years old, was killed during the Boer War. His mother then moved to St. Petersburg, Imperial Russia, to work as a governess for the imperial family. The family later settled in the United States in 1912. Knight had a varied career, including service in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry during World War I as a signaler then served as a captain of field artillery in the U. S. Army Reserve until 1926. He took American citizenship in 1942 shortly before his death in 1943 (he was a major in the United States Army – Special Services) when he was killed in a C-54 air crash in Dutch Guiana (now Suriname) in South America. Hans H. Helweg (1917 – 2008) was a Danish born illustrator who traveled the world but later in life settled in Herefordshire where his mill cottage and land was half in England, half in Wales. While he is also known as a war and landscape artist, in the 1950’s he began illustrating children’s books of which he said, “Though there are many more profitable ways of making a living than drawing for children’s books, I have never found one I like better. You immerse yourself for several weeks in a different world, often in a different period, and if the story is a good one, I am often tempted to spend more time on it than either good sense or the publisher dictate”.
