The American Tract Society (ATS) is a non-denominational, evangelical organization that publishes and distributes Christian literature: History The ATS was founded in 1825 in New York City. It was the first American organization to specialize in publishing religious tracts, pamphlets, books, hymnals, and periodicals. The ATS became one of the largest American publishers before the Civil War. Distribution The ATS employed traveling Christian literature salesmen, called colporteurs, to distribute their literature. The colporteurs would sell and distribute the literature, lead worship services, and counsel with people they met. Civil War During the Civil War, the ATS provided the Union army with religious reading materials and Bibles.
