Each charm measures approximately 1". Optional crackle glass beads – in green, white and red to represent the flag of Italy – are offered as a variation to add some cultural pride. Thank you! -------------------------- THE HORN: Like all cultures, the peoples of Italy have several superstitious beliefs to protect themselves and their loved ones against danger, misfortune and bad luck. Their most well-known symbol of protection is the Italian Horn, which dates back to ancient Roman times, and is still widely used today. The horns ward off the evil eye of devilish envy. By invoking bull-like strength against such evils, the horns bring good luck and good fortune, similar to "touch wood" or "knock wood". Often worn on jewelry, it is also common to see the charm hanging inside a car for protection. Some historians believe it also derives from “cornucopia” -- goat horns filled with gold, precious stones, and products of the earth as symbols of abundance and success, also called the Horn of Plenty. MALOCCHIO/MANO CORNUTO: Literally, "horned hand", is an Italian hand gesture of ancient origin, in which the index and pinkie fingers are extended while the middle and ring fingers are curled into the palm and sealed with the thumb. The shape is meant to evoke the image of horns. Some believe it symbolizes the “poking out the eyes” of the Evil Eye/Malocchio -- the curse of jealousy and envy that people could silently wish upon you with their gaze. In fact, it is not uncommon to see Italians immediately making the horn sign with their hand when someone pays a compliment or wishes you something wonderful. The Evil Eye/Malocchio is thought to be especially harm nursing mothers and their babies, bearing fruit trees, milking animals, the sperm of men and male genitalia -- the "forces" of generational progeny. The custom of making the Mano Cornuto gesture is thought to have originated from ancient times when the moon goddess Luna was associated with animal horns for similar protective purposes. This cultural link between the horned animal head gesture and the worship of a neolithic-era Mother or a fertility goddess whose consort was a male deity called the Horned God still perpetuates today. LAVA STONE: a grounding stone that strengthens one's connection to Mother Earth. It supplies strength, courage, and stability through times of change. The grounding qualities of calming Lava Stone calms the emotions with intense energy and is specifically useful in dissipating anger. Natural wear and tear will also affect your jewelry. By following these simple tips, however, you can maintain your jewelry’s beauty for as long as possible: > DO NOT GET YOUR BRACELET WET ~ Keep your jewelry away from moisture. It is best to remove your bracelet before washing your hands, showering, exercising and swimming since contact with moisture can break down the elastic, ruin finishes and tarnish metals and charms. > AVOID CONTACT WITH CHEMICALS ~ Perfume, soap, moisturizer, lotion, hand sanitizer or other chemicals can weaken the elastic, harm natural crystals and result in the discoloration and peeling of beads and gemstones. > AVOID HEAT EXPOSURE ~ Leaving your bracelet in sunlight or exposed to heat for an extended period of time may lead to elastic erosion and can cause beads and metal to discolor. Remove your bracelet while exercising. > ROLL IT ON AND OFF ~ Do not over-stretch your bracelet! It has been made with pre-stretched elastic. Over-stretching it beyond its capacity will cause it to break. To keep from overly stretching it to put it on and off, slide your fingers into the bracelet first, then gently roll the beads over your knuckles and then onto your wrist. Do the same when taking your bracelet off. > STORE SAFELY ~ Always store your jewelry safely in a soft pouch or secured in a box or drawer. Never wear your jewelry to bed and remove when sleeping.
