Description: NEW YORK CITY - City College - ARCHITECTURE - 1914: This Divided Back Era postcard, mailed in 1914, is of the City College of the City University of New York (known more commonly as the City College of New York or simply City College, CCNY, or colloquially as City), a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), in New York City. It is also the oldest of the City University's twenty-three institutions of higher learning. City College's thirty-five acre Manhattan campus along Convent Avenue from 130th Street to 141st Street is on a hill overlooking Harlem; its neo-Gothic campus was mostly designed by George Browne Post, and many of its buildings are landmarks. CCNY was the first free public institution of higher education in the United States and also for many years has been considered the flagship campus of the CUNY public university system. The card's reverse informs "At Amsterdam Avenue, between 138th and 140th Streets. The most artistic and imposing groups of field stone and terra cotta buildings in the city, occupied 1905. Free tuition [no longer the case] at an annual cost of $615,000." This 100-year-old postcard is in good condition, but shows some soiling and edge wear. There is also a scrape to the card lower left hand corner, removing some of the image. Success Post Card Co. New York. No. 1108.
