The coverage area includes northeastern South America, from the Paraguay River to the Atlantic Ocean, between Uruguay and British Guiana, with hundreds of place names. The image area measures 37.5 x 27.5 cm [14¾" x 10¾"], and longitude is measured from Greenwich. The map was engraved by Sidney Hall, Bury Street, Bloomsbury, and was published by Adam & Charles Black in Black's General Atlas of the World, printed in Edinburgh, 1865, by Frederick Schenck. Topography is delineated in shaded relief, and the distance scale is calibrated in English miles. Among the named places and features are Rio de Janeiro or San Sebastio, Curutiba, São Paulo, Natal, Urubu, Pernambuco, the Amazon River, Porto Seguro, Cuyaba, Montevideo, Paramaribo, Cayenne, Georgetown, Guairá, Olinda, Vitória, Asunción, and many more.
