Description: This Door of Hope mission doll is fantastic and all original. The doll measures just under 11 inch tall. The doll has cloth unjointed bodies with hand carved pear wood heads and lower arms with delineated hands and fingers. The Door of Hope Mission was located in Shanghai, China, and operated from 1901-1950. This doll was likely to have been somewhat early in the production years. Girls who were sold into slavery or prostitution by their families could seek safety in the mission and learn how to sew and make the clothing and bodies of the dolls and thus pay for their keep. The pear wood heads and lower arms were produced by male carvers in Ning-Po. The clothing, sewn by the rescued girls, is all original. She wears an embroidered cotton outfit and a carved black painted bun on the lower back of her head. She also has beautiful carved and painted facial features. She is all original and shows very minor wear from age. There is some fading to the original clothes as seen in pictures. They are an important part of history and should be in every well rounded doll collection.
