This museum grade quality one-of-a-kind antique fireman's jacket is from the Edo-Meiji Era. It is reversible, dyed with natural indigo, which makes it fire retardant. In the inside is hand painted with a powerful painting of Benkei and Ushiwakaru figure. Benkei is a Japanese warrior monk who lived in the later years of the Heian Period, with the character of great strength and loyalty. This jacket is in excellent condition, heavy and solid built. Some colour faded and dirt due to its age, see pictures for reference. This is a very rare work, according to that time period. It can be worn or display for wall decoration. The history of antique fireman's jacket in the Edo-Meiji period, the firemen would wear the indigo "outside" of the jacket, soak in water and go put out the fire and safe people. When they are done with the mission, they will flip the jacket inside out and wear the more artistic side and have sake to celebrate the success of their mission.
