Description: 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. Snow-1, FS-401a. Type of 1856. Repunched Date. Very scarce S1 1857 obverse of 1856. A splendid coin with absolutely great eye appeal, light porosity on an XF-AU example of this rare coin. The king of the 57's, the die with the repunched date is the most coveted die pair. It can be argued that these are among the first regular issue Flying eagle cents struck. In 1857 the Mint used an 1856 Flying Eagle Obverse design to strike some 1857 Flying Eagle cents, therefore, producing two different types. The Type 1 is the 1857 with Obverse of 1856. The Type 2 is the 1857 with Obverse of 1857.Variety Attribution: The 1856 design had the letter "O" of the word "OF" thinner than that of the new 1857 design. Also, the 1857 with Type 1856 design had the inner portion of the letter "O" fairly sloppy, as it was not well rounded compared to the new Type of 1857.RPD: The Re Punched Date is more prominent on the inside of the 8 and the 5 digits on the date. Early die state examples may also show all four digits in the date re punched.1857/857 EAGLE TYPE OF 1856 FS-401a 1C TYPE OF 1856 FS-401a, Snow: S-1Cross Reference: Fivaz-Stanton (OLD): FS-001DiagnosticsLetter O in OF has a squared center, the central serifs of letters E and F are tall enough to touch the upper cross members, and letter M has a slightly bulbous central section. The first A in AMERICA points between denticles.
