The first professional signalers in the British Army were formed in 1870 by Captain Montague Lambert, who established "C" Telegraph Troop within the Royal Engineers. The troop's duties included visual signaling that included Signaling lamps, semaphore flags, mounted orderlies, and telegraphy. The unit first saw action in the Zulu War (1879). It then amalgamated with two Royal Engineers companies in 1884 to form the Telegraph Battalion, still within the Royal Engineers. Signaling remained the responsibility of the Telegraph Battalion during the Boer War and until 1908.] VERY SHARP FOCUS WITH VERY GOOD CONTRAST.
