Description: Rare! Full original ticket stub from the game where MLB future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer struck out 20 batters in a nine-inning game while throwing 119 pitches. Original ticket, not a reprint. He pitched for the Washington Nationals against the Detroit Tigers on May 11, 2016, in Washington, D.C. The Nats won, 3-2. A pitcher striking out 20 batters in nine innings is among the rarest feats in baseball; it has only happened five times in MLB's more than 100-year history. Scherzer was the last one to do that eight years ago. Before 2016, the last one was Randy Johnson in 2001, though it was a game that went 11 innings and Johnson was taken out after getting 20 strikeouts in the first nine innings. Roger Clemens accomplished this feat twice in 1986 and 1996, while Kerry Wood was the other pitcher to do so in 1998, throwing 122 pitches. No one has recorded 21 strikeouts in a nine-inning game, though Tom Cheney struck out 21 in 16 innings in 1962 [he had only 13 k's after nine innings and threw a whopping 228 pitches that game]. The full ticket is in excellent shape, though the corners on one side are slightly worn. From a nonsmoking home. Ticket is 5.5" x 2". Full original tickets for this game are exceedingly rare since most use online digital tickets and are reprints. Scherzer has also played for the Tigers, Dbacks, Mets, Dodgers, and Rangers, where he was traded in 2023.
