Description: One-of-a-kind, guaranteed , because I made it myself!in 1980, while I was living in Germany, I had a small pottery business. Of course I always meddled with clay, and made some special pieces for myself which I would not sell. Then I moved to the US and brought some of those pieces along. Here is a "picture" which has been quite a conversation piece- some people love it, others get goosebumps. What brought this piece into "live" was a story I read in a book- "The enchanted World", Tales of terror" and its a very long story, so I make it short: When harvest failed in medieval Germany, Famine stalked the land. People and animals starved, and vast armies of rats, driven from the empty graneries, scoured the countryside for food.In the town of Bingen the famine was at its worst, and in their desperation people turned to their overlord, Bishop Hatto of Mainz. He was very wealthy and had well-stocked storehouses. But the cruel bishop silenced the hungry. He lured them into a barn, locked the doors and setthe place alight. He turned to his minions and said: "They would eat up my grain like rats, so like rats they died". The story goes on for a couple of more pages. The end of it, you guessed it: Thousands of rodents stalked the bishop, overcame him by force of numbers, and sated their hunger on his well-nourished flesh. So the story goes. And I tried to capture it by forming clay into rats and a hand....The sculptured picture itself measures 13"x16".My husband cut out a frame out of wood, to give it a little more bazazz, I tacked a brown piece of silk on the back and nailed it on the wall. Then the picture was hung and fastened with 3 screws against it. So, there you have it. The picture weighs 12 pounds without lots of packing material, which I will have to use for it, so shipping will be costly. I can also copy the story so you have something to tell your guest when they ask why, how and so on....Please note: I ship to most international destinations. Please contact me for shipping rates
