Electrically and cosmetically restored KLH Model Eleven FM portable all-in-one music system, mid to late 1960s vintage, featuring FM (stereo), Aux input (you can connect your phone) and a Garrard 'changer' turntable with stacking spindle for loading multiple records. This was not a low end unit, like most portable record players of the era. It's a top quality all-in-one system designed by an audio legend, Henry Kloss (KLH, Advent, AR, Tivoli, Cambridge Soundworks) and manufactured in Cambridge, MA. KLH speakers, radios, amps, and receivers made from the 1950's to the mid 70's are highly regarded (and collectible) to this day because they were well-built, sound great, and look nice. KLH portables are not exactly rare, but the ones that included the FM tuner are. This example has been well maintained and is in very nice condition. These were often owned by college students (those who could afford them anyway) and often took quite a beating over the years. It retains all original knobs and feet, as well as the original power cable (hard to find!) and the long speaker wires, which work great. The cabinet is free of dents or major damage, although there are a few marks and scratches upon close inspection. So, what's been done? The entire system was completely disassembled and electronically restored. A full restoration has the goal of making everything as reliable as possible for years to come, as well as recover the full sonic performance these systems were known for. It's much more involved than typical service work. For this unit, all electrolytic capacitors were replaced with modern, high quality equivalents (Nichicon, Panasonic). All switches and dials were electrically cleaned for static-free operation. The tuner has been cleaned and lubricated, and the dial has been aligned. A tuning problem was fixed by replacing a bad transistor. It was electrically checked using data from the original service manual, and adjusted as necessary for correct stereo output. I'm always shocked at how good this system sounds, even better than the KLH Eleven with the wood speakers. What about the turntable?It's been completely disassembled, cleaned of old grease, lubed, reassembled, and fully tested. It's a changer, has 4 speeds, and can stack and drop 8 or 9 LP's and will turn the whole system off when the records are done playing. It comes with a changer spindle, as well as a single play spindle. The stylus pressure/tracking force has been properly set, the arm lift and setdown points have been adjusted. A new drive wheel has been installed ($50) and the turntable spins at the proper speed.What about the cosmetic restoration? The case has been cleaned of years of grime and surface oxidation has been removed from the handles. The control knobs were removed and cleaned, as were the platter and all other surfaces. It looks nice, however as with anything of this age and intended use there is some patina and areas that could not be made to look new again. This is a rare find in this condition, and it's a pleasure to use and listen to. It really does work as a portable-the latches for the lid and speakers are all working, and the feet are solid. The handle is stout and secure. It takes just moments to set up and put away. It also works as a home system for the same reason-not everyone has the space for a turntable and speakers to be out on display permanently.
