The El Rey Motel had its beginnings as a 12 unit motel built in 1936 when US Highway 66 ran north from Albuquerque through Santa Fe. Hwy. 66 was re-routed in 1937 so the El Rey was only on 66 for about a year but it is mentioned in all the travel books since it is still operating in Santa Fe and it provides a retro experience. Use Google and search for the El Rey in Santa Fe. Obviously this matchcover dates from the 1970s and well past the time that the El Rey Motel was on 66 but it may be a nice souvenir from a motel that once was on 66. There is no tape, glue or handwriting on the inside of this matchcover. This matchcover is in excellent unstruck condition.
